The coach tour gives you about ninety minutes at the falls, in the middle of the day, with everyone else. Here is what a second day buys you.
Ouzoud is roughly 150 km from Marrakech — about two and a half hours each way by road. That maths is why the standard day trip works the way it does: leave the city around eight, arrive late morning, spend ninety minutes or so at the falls, eat, and start back mid-afternoon.
It is a real day out and plenty of people enjoy it. But it puts you at the falls in the two hours when every other coach is also there, in the hardest light of the day, and it gives you no time for anything above or below the waterfall itself.
What the early morning is actually like
Walk down at first light and the lower pools are close to empty. The sun has not come over the rim of the gorge yet, so the spray sits in the air and the whole basin is cool. The macaques are active and busy with their own morning rather than with tourists. You will pass perhaps a handful of people.
By eleven, that same path carries several hundred. Nothing has gone wrong — it is simply the coaches arriving. If you stay the night, you have already been and come back for breakfast.
The evening light
The other thing an overnight buys you is the end of the day. Late afternoon, the sun drops behind the gorge wall and lights the spray from the side; on a clear evening there is usually a rainbow sitting in it. Day-trippers are on the road home by then.
What you can add with a second day
- The gorge walk downstream, past the mills and gardens — an hour or two, mostly flat, almost empty.
- The Amazigh village at Tanaghmeilt above the falls, built in flat-roofed terraces of earth and stone.
- The olive groves the valley is named for, and the small presses working in season.
- A swim, which after the climb back up is less of a luxury than it sounds.
The practical case
Five hours of driving in one day is tiring, and it is the part of the trip nobody remembers fondly. Splitting it means you drive out one afternoon and back the next, with a night in between. Rooms here start at 450 MAD, breakfast is included, and dinner is 120 MAD a head — which for most people is comparable to what the day tour costs once lunch is counted, for considerably more of Ouzoud.
If you are coming in March through June, when the falls are at peak flow, the argument gets stronger: that is the version of Ouzoud worth arranging your trip around.
